Professional traders understand that their emotions are likely to have an effect on their stock trading whether they like it or not. Hence, they develop personalities that enable them to conquer their emotions and trade profitably. Two of the most significant character traits are patience and discipline in stock trading, simply because they permit you to handle one of the most hard areas of trading.
Making Up Trades
Probably the most emotional time for a stock trader happens when their profit / loss is bad, and they are looking forward to their next trade to come along. During this time they will be impatient and anxious, and they're going to be desperate to take their next trade in order to generate back the money that they've lost. Many new traders (as well as lots of experienced traders) will begin taking trades which don't implement their stock trading procedure (referred to as making up a trade). When this occurs, their loss will increase, and will continue to do so until they realize what they're doing and correct their actions and stop going away from the disciplines which may have demonstrated rewarding previously.
Taking Your Feelings
The solution to stock trading is not to try and eliminate or control your emotions (all the best in case you opt to attempt), but to develop personality that enable you to control your reaction to your thoughts. By developing a personality that counteracts your feelings you will be able to continue making logical decisions, even when your heart is pounding and sweat is streaming down your face (maybe this is a little exaggeration).
Patience and discipline are essential character traits for effective traders. Being patient allows you to await your next trade regardless of your present profit / loss, and being disciplined allows you to take only trades which are part of your stock picking system (not making up a trade). For a few traders, the thought of losing money is enough to make them instantly patient and disciplined, but for others, the feelings are extremely strong, plus they must develop their patience and discipline. Know when to hold em’ and know when to fold em’ is key. There isn't anything wrong with being sidelined in times of uncertainty and intensive volatility in the markets.

Trading Log
One method of finding out how to be patient and discipline is to maintain a thorough log of every trade that you take. By the end of your day (or week, or month), replay every trade, and compare the replayed trades on your trading log. In case there are any differences, you have to be ready to know what caused them, and hopefully really know what you must avoid the next time. Also, treat every losing stock trade as a way to learn and create knowledge. Examine each losing stock trade in detail and check out distinct traits on why a particular stock trade went the wrong way. Follow a proven stock picking system and set of disciplines as developed experienced and successful stock traders.
Another method to become patient and disciplined would be to have absolute self-confidence in your stock trading system. Knowing that your stock trading system will make money over the long term can be enough to overcome the negative emotions that occur if you are going through a negative profit / loss. The only way to rely on your stock trading system is to examine the system completely eventually and back test pick recommendations. When you have tested your stock trading system over a significant period of time, and it is constantly profitable, there is no reason to question that it'll keep on being profitable.
